Shelving, Storage Racking & Workbenches

Choosing the Right Shelving, Racking & Workbench

The right storage equipment helps you make better use of your garage, stockroom or workshop. Start by considering what you need to store, the space available and the weight each shelf will carry.

Measure Your Space

Check the height, width and depth available, allowing room for doors, walkways and access to stored items. Consider pipes, sockets and other obstructions before choosing a unit.

Product dimensions are generally shown as height × width × depth, but always check the individual listing. The usable shelf space may be smaller than the unit’s overall dimensions.

Understand Load Capacities

Check both the capacity per shelf and any stated maximum load for the complete unit.

UDL means uniformly distributed load: the weight is spread evenly across the shelf. A shelf rated for 300kg UDL should not be assumed to support a single 300kg object concentrated in its centre.

Choose a unit suited to your intended load and follow the manufacturer’s loading instructions. Store heavier items on lower shelves.

Choose Suitable Shelf Materials

Check the frame finish and shelf material against the environment where the unit will be used. MDF, metal and other shelf surfaces have different care requirements.

Do not assume a unit is suitable for damp conditions or outdoor use unless the product specification confirms this. Consider moisture, cleaning and the items you intend to store.

Shelf Spacing and Extra Levels

Adjustable shelf positions can help accommodate boxes, tools and stock of different heights. Check the number of levels included and the adjustment options available.

When adding extra levels, match them to the exact shelving model. Width and depth alone do not establish compatibility, and adding shelves does not increase the unit’s overall load capacity.

Assembly and Positioning

Read the assembly instructions and check which tools are required. Position the unit on a suitable, level surface and follow any requirements for wall fixing, bracing or other securing measures.

Check that all components are correctly fitted before loading, and inspect the unit periodically for damage or loose fittings.

Choosing a Workbench

Consider the working height, surface area and space needed for your tasks. Check whether the stated load rating applies to the worktop, lower shelf or complete bench.

If you need castors, confirm that they are compatible with the exact model and check any changes to load capacity or operating instructions.

Complete Units, Bundles and Accessories

Check what the price includes. An extra shelf level, castor set or replacement component is not a complete storage unit.

For multi-bay offers, confirm the number of units, shelves and components supplied. Compare the full package rather than the headline price alone.
